Tia Williams        Lilianna Zulunova

Student: Tia Williams
Class: Sophomore
Major: Communications/Journalism
Interview subject: Lilianna Zulunova – NYU communication studies student born in Uzbekistan

Tia says: “I chose to interview Lilianna Zulunova because she seemed really different. She struck me as truly eccentric, not at all reserved, funny at times, but somehow misunderstood. Observing Lilianna prior to the interview I found her most used quote “I’m going to be myself. I’m going to express myself and if people don’t like it…I am sorry. This is Lily!” I wanted to crack her surface a bit to find out exactly where her accent comes from, when she came to America, how she’s coped with ‘the American experience’, and what’s she’s doing here in Prague. I found out more. I discovered a life I’d never expected to find in the eyes of the bubbly 22-year-old I’ve been partying with, shopping with, and taking class with. I had no idea of the struggles and life experiences she’d had. She’s a young woman with an old woman’s life worth of experience.
Thanks Lilianna.”

Kari Lipschutz    Jiří Pehe

Student: Kari Lipschutz
Class: Sophomore
Major: Broadcast Journalism and Cultural Anthropology
Interview subject: Jiri Pehe - Director of NYU in Prague

Kari says: “I chose to interview Jiri Pehe for many reasons. One of the things that really interested me was the fact that not only was he the political advisor to Vaclav Havel, but he is still extremely active in writing political commentaries. It is amazing to me that he is the director of NYU in Prague and still has time to be a prominent political critic. I wanted to interview him to see how he ended up being the director of NYU in Prague and how he came to be so intimately involved with politics.”

Allison Lee         Zdeněk Kirschner

Student: Allison Lee
Class: Junior
Major: Broadcast Journalism
Interview Subject: Zdenek Kirschner - NYU in Prague - Photography Professor, Vice-President of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague

Allison says: “Zdenek Kirschner is one of the teachers you will never forget. He is full of life stories, and is willing to share them with anyone who asks. Some of the key points I wanted to address in my interview was what photography was like for artists during, and after, the period of communist rule in the Czech Republic; who and what is an inspiration for Professor Kirschner’s photography; and the main difference between his Czech and American students.”

Student:
Anna Fieldman
Class: Sophomore
Major: Communications
Interview Subject: Leah Gaffen, NYU Academic Adviser

Allison says: “My decision to study abroad in Prague was one of the best decisions of my life. The classes here are amazing and I’ve met so many wonderful people. I decided to interview Leah Gaffen, the academic advisor here at the NYU Center, because I wanted to get a different perspective on what this program is all about. I’d had very few interactions with Leah and was eager to find out how she first came to Prague, how she began working at for NYU, and how she personally viewed the American college students that are roaming freely throughout the streets of Europe. I learned a lot about a person that I see every day but had never talked to and would like to thank Leah for taking the time and answering my questions so thoughtfully and honestly.”
