Journalism program

Students have the chance to look at print and broadcast media from an international perspective through NYU in Prague’s journalism program, launched in the spring of 2006. Students can take both theoretical and applied journalism classes taught by leading American, British and Czech journalists. This program is offered in both fall and spring semesters.

The theoretical classes currently offered are Journalism and Society: Central Europe and Beyond, which focuses on how media can be used to interpret society, and Issues and Ideas: Foreign Media and the Post-Communist Media Systems in the Czech Republic, which explores the transformation of Czech media since the country became a democratic society. Many journalism students also take Media, Culture and Globalization, a communications course offered through the Steindhardt School of Education.

NYU in Prague offers four applied journalism classes: Production and Publication: Radio News; Critical Writing: Reporting the Arts; Travel Writing and Issues and Ideas: International Reporting. These classes are all taught by career journalists based in Prague and focus on practical reporting, writing and broadcast skills.

There are also a number of media-related internships available through NYU in Prague’s internship program. Internships are offered for credit only if students have made arrangements with their advisors at their home university before arriving in Prague.

NYU in Prague is also the first site to launch its own webzine, the Prague Wanderer. Articles are culled mainly from students' classwork and cover myriad topics about life in the Czech Republic from an American point of view. Articles from Prague Wanderer have been picked up by the Prague Daily Monitor, Prague TV and the Prague Post print edition. Any student can submit articles or join the Prague Wanderer editorial team.
