Internships

"When I read Jeffery Eugenides’ novel "Middlesex," I never thought that I would meet the author - let alone that I would celebrate winning the Pulitzer Prize for the book with him in Prague. Being an intern for “The Prague Writer’s Festival” I found myself befriending world-renowned authors in the most surprising of circumstances."

- Eric Murdoch, NYU in Prague student

Befriending Pulitzer prize winning authors.... working as a research assistant for the former Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs.... teaching English to the Minister of Transportation....writing investigative articles published in Prague magazines.... assisting with graphics on the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty web site... running an "Olympics" for refugee children... these are all experiences of NYU in Prague students who have participated in the excellent and varied internship and community service programs. Every semester, approximately 15 organizations take students under their wings. The work - which is usually 6-10 hours per week- gives students another perspective on the Czech Republic and the region, and is an excellent way to meet leaders in the fields of arts, politics, NGOs, economics, and media. All internships are unpaid, and credit must be arranged in advance by the students through their department of study. We are looking for motivated people who will take this experience seriosly.

UMĚLEC  MAGAZINE
Umělec Magazine was founded in 1997 as the first post-revolution Czech magazine devoted to “visual culture.” Although the magazine’s emphasis is on art in Central and Eastern Europe—a focus that stems from its unique position in that region—its interests are expanding exponentially, and the magazine is presently well-placed to critically address cultural issues in the countries of the former Soviet Union—and China.

Sometimes the articles published are shocking, but they remain sensitive to regional realities, and the magazine does not hesitate to transgress traditional frontiers of the definition of art. With two separate editions of 90 pages in English and Czech, the magazine has begun publishing in German as well. In September 2005, an edition of the magazine was published in Spanish.

The publishers are also seeking to expand the magazine’s readership abroad, and particularly in the US.

The editorial intern would have considerably more flexible responsibilities associated with preparation of texts for publication. Although essentially an editing and copy-editing assignment, there may be considerable creative flexibility, as most articles arrive in forms written by non-native speakers. Additional responsibilities include communication with international institutions on behalf of projects as they emerge, including grant-writing, exhibition presentation and catalogue production.
