History of Czech Architecture
The course covers history of architecture from the Mediaeval to contemporary eras with a focus on 19th and 20th Century architecture, urbanism and visual arts. Early classes will cover pre-Romanesque and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. We will then explore 19th and 20th Century styles - from Historicism and Art Nouveau to Cubism, Art-Déco, Avant-garde Functionalism, post-war Stalinist art and architecture, and contemporary work. Students will be acquainted with the most significant examples of these types of architecture through slide-show presentations, short videos and by visiting the buildings themselves (including tours of Prague Castle interiors, the Mueller villa, churches, palaces, gardens and castles, museums and galleries). The students are expected to come to understand the evolution of Central European art and architecture, town planning and theory.
