Event Burma VJ: Reporting From a Closed Country (Richtruv Dum, from Nov 23, 2009 06:00 PM to Nov 23, 2009 08:00 PM)
Come see the film "Burma VJ: Reporting From a Closed Country.” The film will be followed by a discussion with a Czech journalist who was in Burma right before the failed Saffron Revolution, and who know works for Czech Television. See http://burmavjmovie.com/ Burma VJ, which has won tons of documentary and human rights awards, is about clandestine video journalists inside Burma, which is run by a repressive totalitarian junta. The film, which mesmerized me last year at the One World Festival here, shows how these brave journalists risk their lives to film a growing revolution-peace-democracy movement among the monks, one that is eventually crushed. Their horrific fate is of course also the fate of the journalists. It is a suspenseful, extremely colorful and engaging film, like a great spy film, except it is true! It is also heartbreaking but rather than impelling you to misery, it makes you want to do something. And it is about journalism, and how without human rights, the lines between journalism and advocacy blur. The NYTimes calls the film: "a rich, thought-provoking film not only because of the story it tells, but also because of the perspective it offers."
