Zora Butorova

 

Zora Butorova graduated in sociology at Comenius University in Bratislava. Before 1989, her major field of study was sociology and ethics of science. In 1989, she participated at the democratization of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and after 1990, she has become one of the key figures in public opinion research in Slovakia. In 1998, she was one of the founders of the civic campaign of non-governmental organizations, OK '98, which contributed to free and fair parliamentary elections in Slovakia. Currently she is senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Affairs, focusing on political culture, public opinion, and gender relations. She has edited and co-authored a number of books, including She and He in Slovakia: Gender Issues in Public Opinion (1996); Democracy and Discontent in Slovakia: A Public Opinion Profile of a Country in Transition (1998), The 1998 Parliamentary Elections and Democratic Rebirth in Slovakia (1999); Krehká sila. Dvadsať rozhovorov o životných cestách žien [Fragile Strength: Twenty Interviews about the Life Stories of Women] (2001)

 

Besides writing studies and articles for academic journals and print media, Zora Butorova regularly contributes to annual comprehensive country reports Slovakia: A Global Report on the State of Society (1996 – 2009). In 2005 – 2008, she was the leader of the project Plus for Women 45+. Within this project, she edited three publications and most recently, she was the chief author and editor of the book She and He in Slovakia. Gender and Age in the Period of Transition (2009).
